Hello! My name is Simon. I am nine. I am going to bea detective.
I like puzzles.
  This is Butterfly House. I live here with my family. I like Butterfly House. There are 12 flats. Our flat is number ten. It is on the fifth floor. Can you see our flat? There is a vase of flowers in the window. My mum likes flowers.
  Yesterday evening at seven o'clock, Alice came to ouflat. Alice lives at flat number nine. She is a nurse.
'Have you seen Smokey?' asked Alice. Smokey is Alice's cat. She
is a small, fluffy grey cat. She likes people. She is friendly. She likes food, too! She is a greedy cat!
'I saw her yesterday,' I answered 'Mum gave her some chicken. But
I haven't seen her today.' Friendly greedy yesterday

'Oh dear!' said Alice.
  'Don't be sad,' I said . 'I can help you. I'm going to be a detective!'
I opened my notebook. Detectives always have notebooks. I wrote
down the names of all our neighbours.

We went to flat number one. Mr Kelly came to the door. He is
an ambulance driver.
'Have you seen Smokey?' we asked.
  'No. Smokey usually comes here for breakfast at eight O'clock. I always give her some meat, and sometimes I give her some milk, too. But I haven't seen her today.'
We thanked Mr Kelly. I wrote everything in my notebook.

We went to flats number two, three, four, five, six, seven and eight.
We didn't visit flat number nine or flat number ten!
We asked all our neighbours the same questions: 'Do you know
Smokey?" Does she visit you?' and 'Have you seen her today?' Everybody said: 'Yes, she often comes here. I usually feed her.
But I haven't seen her today.'


  Alice and I went to flat number eleven. We heard a loud noise: 'Woof! Woof!'
Mr Lemon came to the door. There was an enormous dog behind him.
'Smokey never comes here,' said Mr Lemon.
  At flat number 12, Miss Garden said, 'Smokey always visits me at about one o'clock. I always feed her. She likes fish. But I haven't seen her today.'

  Cats are good pets. They are clean and quiet. They can live in towns or in the country.
  Cats like milk, and they need water, too. They cannot eat vegetables or bread. They need meat or fish. Some people buy packets
or tins of cat food for their pets.
  Some cats are very beautiful. This is a Persian cat. His hair is very long and fluffy.

Cats can catch rats, mice or birds. The cat usually eats them.
  A cat lived in a shop in Scotland. Her name was Towser. Towser caught mice every night. She did not eat them.' She gave them to her family. Every morning, her family counted the mice. They wrote the numbers in a notebook. Towser cau t 23,000 mice!


  The oldest cat in the world is 34 years old! She does not catch mice now. She sits on a cushion and looks out of the window.

The Biggest Dad

Hello. I am Linda. I am nine years old. I am one metre 30
centimetres tall. This is my sister, Sandy. She is older than me. She
is eleven. Sandy is taller than me, too.
Our brother, Michael, is the oldest. He is 13. Michael is the tallest, too. He is one metre 75 centimetres tall. Our Mum's name is Sally. She is taller than Sandy and me. But she is not as tall as Michael.

  It was a hot afternoon and Wendy looked out of the classroom window. Then the teacher said the word 'prize'. Wendy sat up and listened. '
Each student is going to grow a pumpkin. There is going to be a
prize for the biggest pumpkin,' said the teacher.
Wendy was happy. 'I'm going to win!' she thought. 'I'm going to grow the biggest pumpkin!'
